In the band’s nine year history, Portugal. The Man has seen a lot. From their humble beginnings touring in a minivan and eating rice to creating their own independent record label, the band has been steeped in DIY ethics from the start. In our IAtv interview at B.O.M.B. Fest, the guys talk about their history, their thoughts on indie and major labels, and why appreciating touring makes all the difference in the world.

Portugal. The Man Quick Tips

  • If your hometown isn’t composed of the target fan market your band is looking for, move! There are plenty of other cities around the country that your band would probably be a better fit in.
  • Even the most successful bands were DIY at one point in time. Portugal. The Man, for instance, went on their first tours in a minivan that was so loaded with gear their only option was to sleep on top of the instrument cases. They bought a 5 lb. bag of rice and a rice cooker and hit the road! Look where they are now.
  • Don’t stereotype people who work for major labels. Those companies might have gotten a bad rap over the years –- and often for good reason –- but the good ones are made up of down-to-earth, hardworking professionals that have the potential to really push your career forward.
  • On the flipside of that coin, don’t assume that just because you do get signed to a major label means your work is over and you’re automatically going to become the next big thing.
  • Staying in control of your career and maintaining relationships with all the right people is key. Portugal. The Man makes sure that everyone stays happy, ensuring that all the working parts continue to operate efficiently.
  • Touring is exhausting, but a lot of that exhaustion is easier to handle if you alter your mental perception. Just remember, you’re getting to see the country/world and play music at the same time. Life could be worse
