Found Around: When is Hiring a Publicist Necessary?

As the little band that could starts gaining momentum, the need for supporting personnel is sure to pick up as well. We've covered the topic in our TrueDIY profile of Adam Ritchie, but here's some additional insight from Indie on the Move. They suggest that you should try to do as much as you can on your own, but once your band is in a stable position you may want to consider hiring a publicist to join your music family. Publicists, by reaching out to markets that may have not been previously accessible, can do a lot for a burgeoning band's career.

(Indie on the Move) When to Hire a Publicist?

As your band grows, you will start to put a team together.  With any luck this will eventually include a manager, booking agent, etc.  It will most likely start with your buddy who owns a van and offers to go on that 2 week tour, helping with driving and merch.  But the important thing is you are building a team.  This is necessary for two reasons – first it strengthens band morale, gives the band entity focus beyond the individual players to something greater, something bigger.  Somewhat of a ‘gang mentality’ (in the good way) for all concerned.  Second, it legitimizes your band in the eyes of those you will be working with, everyone from photographers to clubs (and their booking agents) to press, etc.  Avenues that are previously inaccessible, or at the very least quite hard to reach, will begin to return calls and emails put forth by your “team” to move the band forward.
